Bitch Planet: The EssayThe comic, Bitch Planet, attempts to address issues of patriarchy and toxic masculinity through the use of satire, which is defined as “the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues” and redress this system of oppression with feminism. As such, Bitch Planet is its own form of resistance to authority and power.Now that you have read Bitch Planet, consider the ways in which the creators think about what it means to be a woman, what it means to be complicit or non-compliant, and the price to be paid for either. Keep this in mind as you address ONE of the following questions:1. The premiere issue of Bitch Planet features an essay by feminist and scholar, Danielle Henderson, who argues “The striking thing about Bitch Planet is that we’re already on it.” Is Bitch Planet an allegory, (defined as the expression of truths or generalizations about human existence by means of symbolic fictional figures and their actions)? If so, is it an effective one? What argument are the creators making? How are they making it? What are they arguing for or against?2. In Bitch Planet, ‘civil disobedience’ is defined and enacted differently than in our previous texts. Define and identify acts of civil disobedience in the text. What does civil disobedience look like in Bitch Planet? How do these acts of defiance and resistance differ from the norm and why? How are they similar to or different from civil disobedience as defined by thinkers, like Thoreau? Is civil disobedience different when it is gendered? If so, in what ways?3. Roxanne Gay, Tasha Fierce and bell hooks in their essays discuss the ways in which feminism is misunderstood and mischaracterized; so much so, that many people today find it difficult to identify with it. How do the creators of Bitch Planet confront those misconceptions?
