ASSIGNMENT #3 (20%) Patient Safety / QSEN Writing Assignment Students will complete all assigned readings on the topic of Patient Safety and Health Care Quality. Students will watch the posted videos on the Lewis Blackman story, the Dennis Quaid twins, and the Josie King story. Students will then write a 4 to 5-page paper in APA 6th Ed. 2nd printing format reflecting on these stories and the commonalities between them. Consider this; as a health care consumer (patient), what would you likely consider to be elements of
quality care when you receive health care services? As a professional nurse, what would you likely consider to be elements of quality care when you provide health care services? Discuss the commonalities and differences of these two lists, how much do they match? Differ?
In their paper, students will also discuss the concepts of quality improvement, patient safety goals, Six Sigma, and Quality Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN).

The overarching purpose of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) initiative is to face the challenge of training future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) required to improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems in which they operate.
QSEN faculty and a National Advisory Board created quality and safety competencies for nursing and set targets for the knowledge, abilities, and attitudes to be developed in nursing pre-licensure programs for each competency, based on the Institute of Medicine1 competencies.
The six tables below contain these concepts as a resource for curricular planning in formal academic programs, transition to practice, and continuing education programs 2.

Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) tackles the problem of equipping nurses with the skills they need to continuously improve the quality and safety of the health-care systems in which they operate.
The QSEN faculty members adopted the Institute of Medicine(1) competencies for nursing (patient-centered care, teamwork and cooperation, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics), proposing definitions for what it means to be a competent and respected nurse.
The authors suggest statements of knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) for each competency that should be cultivated throughout pre-licensure nursing education based on the competency definitions.
Faculty and advisory board members of Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) invite the profession to comment on the skills and definitions, as well as if the KSAs for pre-licensure education are appropriate goals for students preparing for basic practice as a registered nurse.
