Assignment: Interdisciplinary Committees
Topic 10 Scholarly Activities
Details:
Throughout the RN-to-BSN program, students are required to participate in scholarly activities outside of clinical practice or professional practice. Examples of scholarly activities include attending conferences, seminars, journal club, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, interdisciplinary committees, quality improvement committees, and any other opportunities available at your site, within your community, or nationally.
You are required to post one scholarly activity while you are in the BSN program, which should be documented by the end of this course. In addition to this submission, you are required to be involved and contribute to interdisciplinary initiatives on a regular basis.
Submit, as the assignment, a summary report of the scholarly activity, including who, what, where, when and any relevant take-home points. Include the appropriate program competencies associated with the scholarly activity as well as future professional goals related to this activity. You may use the Scholarly Activity Summary resource to help guide this assignment.
Solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide.
You are not required to submit this assignment to Turnitin.
Members of the graduate faculty affiliated with two or more academic units spanning distinct schools, colleges, or campuses may be interested in certain domains of knowledge or investigation.
Under the Graduate Schools administrative framework, the Dean of the Graduate School may form two types of faculty groups to enhance collaboration:
Interdisciplinary committees that do not offer degrees or interdisciplinary groups that do.
According to local policies and established faculty governance, deans of colleges or schools other than the Graduate School may promote interdisciplinary activity within such divisions.
The current message only applies to the Graduate Schools multidisciplinary committees and degree-providing groups.
At the request of a group of graduate professors, the Dean of the Graduate School appoints Graduate School interdisciplinary committees and Graduate School interdisciplinary groups.
When the interests of participating faculty cannot easily be represented by a single chair, dean, or chancellor, and when a single college, school, or campus cannot provide the administrative structure required to support related educational activities, interdisciplinary committees and groups may be formed.
Graduate faculty members can only serve on interdisciplinary committees and groups.
These professors work on committees or groups, suggest a chair, who is nominated by the Graduate School Dean, and select additional members.
Faculty who participate in these committees and groups keep their primary affiliations and faculty posts at their home institutions.
Graduate School interdisciplinary committees do not grant graduate degrees or certificates, but Graduate School interdisciplinary groups are competent academic units that have been granted permission to grant a graduate degree or certificate.
Any resulting academic programs are administered at the college level by the Graduate School.
Committees that are multidisciplinary in nature
Graduate faculty from multiple schools, colleges, or campuses who want to form an interdisciplinary committee focused on research or graduate teaching might apply to be designated as a Graduate School interdisciplinary committee.
Such committees may be formed for a variety of reasons, including formalizing cross-institutional coordination of research initiatives, proposal submissions, graduate student recruiting, consultation, seminars, or graduate curriculum.
Graduate students involved with an interdisciplinary committee must be enrolled in and meet all requirements of an authorized degree program; an interdisciplinary committee does not offer its own graduate degree, certificate, coursework, or independent curriculum.
Interdisciplinary committees may spearhead the creation of a new graduate degree or certificate program.
The Dean of the Graduate School receives a letter from participating graduate academics requesting the formation of an interdisciplinary committee.
The letter should explain the committees mission and specify the recommended members faculty ranks and principal appointment units.
The committee chair or co-chairs should be named in the letter, and they should serve for the duration of the groups activity or until the committee formally elects a new chair.
The committee chair is in charge of the committee and reports on its actions to the Dean of the Graduate School.
Initially, committees are appointed for up to three years, in accordance with the academic calendar.
The committee chair must advise the Graduate School whether the committee wants to be reappointed at the end of the appointment period.
The procedure for changing the composition of a committee or the committee chair is as follows:
(1) nomination by a committee member or chair; (2) quorum majority vote endorsing the new chair or committee member (in person, electronically, or on paper); (3) committee chair submission of vote results to the Dean of the Graduate School via the Office of Academic Affairs and Planning; and (4) confirmation from the Graduate School.
When a faculty member resigns from the committee, the faculty members graduate faculty appointment ends, the defined appointment period on the committee ends, or the committee members vote to remove the member according to the voting process mentioned above, the member is removed from the committee.
Normally, the Graduate School does not provide funding for committee activity.
Interdiscipline Teams
The first stage in forming an interdisciplinary graduate degree or certificate program under the direction of the Graduate School Deans Office is for professors to organize an interdisciplinary committee.
Following the interdisciplinary committees acceptance, its faculty can submit a graduate degree or certificate program in the same way that any department, school, college, or campus might propose a new degree or certificate program.
The interdisciplinary committee is designated as a qualified degree-offering interdisciplinary group and is administered through the Graduate School if the Board of Regents gives approval to award the new degree.
On an interim basis, the chair of the interdisciplinary committee becomes the chair of the newly created interdisciplinary group.
The chairs appointment must be re-confirmed by a vote of the faculty group and submitted to the Dean of the Graduate School for formal appointment, as detailed below.
A Graduate School multidisciplinary group serves as the degree-granting academic unit with the authority to provide graduate programs and oversee graduate students enrolled in such programs.
Admission to and graduation from the multidisciplinary groups degree program is recommended.
When finances and space are available from partner institutions and colleges, it may administer an operating budget and space; generally, the Graduate School does not allocate such funds or facilities.
The graduate programs research funds and contracts may be administered by a group.
Assignment: Interdisciplinary Committees
The key appointments of a groups faculty are held in departments, schools, colleges, or campuses; these are held in departments, schools, colleges, or campuses.
Members of an interdisciplinary group must be graduate faculty members at the university (see Graduate School Memorandum No. 12: Membership in the Graduate Faculty).
The following procedure applies to changes in group membership, group chair, or academic program director:
(1) nomination by a group member or group chair; (2) quorum majority vote (in person, electronic, or paper) by the faculty group regarding endorsement of the new member, chair, or director; (3) submission of vote results from the group chair to the Dean of the Graduate School via the Office of Academic Affairs and Planning; and (4) confirmation by the Graduate School of new group members or formal appointment by the Dean of the Graduate School for a new chair or director.
When a faculty member resigns from the group, the faculty members graduate faculty appointment ends, the defined appointment period on the group ends, or the group chooses to remove the member according to the voting process stated above, the member is removed from the group.
In terms of the academic program given by the interdisciplinary group, the chair of the interdisciplinary group reports to the Dean of the Graduate School in the same way as the head of a department reports to the dean of a departmentalized school or college (Executive Order I.4).
The chair also has the task of providing program specifics and arranging support for the program with other chairs, directors, and deans who are directly involved with the programs running.
In collaboration with program staff and the Graduate School, the multidisciplinary group chair is in charge of overseeing the programs budget and resources.
The academic program director and Graduate Program Coordinator are usually the same person who chairs the interdisciplinary group (GPC).
The job of the multidisciplinary group chair may be distinct from that of the academic program director in some situations.
When these responsibilities are distinct, the GPC can be either the chair or the program director.
The academic program director must be a graduate faculty member who also belongs to the interdisciplinary group.
Assignment: Interdisciplinary Committees
An interdisciplinary group may be kept in the Graduate School indefinitely, subject to periodic review by the Graduate School in the same way as all graduate degree programs and at least once every ten years, or the degree program may be transferred to another degree-offering unit using the appropriate university-level process.
If the degree program is transferred to another academic unit, the degree program will be overseen by the graduate faculty of that unit, and the Graduate School interdisciplinary group will be disbanded.
