The Gap Inc. is one of the largest producers and sellers of apparel and personal care products. The company had 132, 000 employees as of January 2012. The products are for infants, children, and grown-ups. All these products are sold as brands labeled “under the Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy Athleta and Piperlime”. The company has branches in North America, Europe, and Asia. The company has its head offices in California, USA.   Gap Inc is engaged in the business designing and retailing clothes, fashion articles (accessories) and products for personal care for men, women, children, and infants. All these products are sold through retail outlets in America, Canada, Europe, Japan, and China.

The company also sells its products to licensed distributors and retail outlets in Asia, Australia, Eastern European Countries, some South American countries, the Middle East and Africa. By the end of their last closing year, which was 2012, Gap owned 3,036 retails stores and 227 franchise stores in different parts of the world. Gap runs its business in both ways by direct selling through its outlets and indirect selling. The retail outlets or stores and franchise stores are inclusive of each of the company’s brands such as “Gap”, “Banana Republic”, “Old Navy” and “Athleta” The clothes sold by Gap are clothes for everyday use such as denim, khakis and T shirts including clothes currently considered fashionable.

Gap also manufactures and sells intimate women’s items such as night gowns, maternity gowns, casual clothing and sports women designed and made specifically for women. Accessories for the banana republic brand include handbags, shoes, jewelry and toiletry items.  Besides selling these products at company outlets and franchise stores it also sells them at factory outlets at reduced prices. The Old Navy brand sells expensive apparel, shoes, and accessories in outlets in Canada and the USA. Its Athleta brand sells practical women’s sports attire and footwear for different activities which include sporting activities like golfing, running, tennis, yoga, etc.

The company also sells online where consumers can buy all products that are sold in their retail outlets including some large sizes that are not available at their stores. Gap also prints and distributes catalogs which feature the company’s products. The company has more than 1,000 vendors which make labeled and non labeled items. Gap currently owns a total of 8.6 million square feet of space used for distribution facilities in 43 countries. This makes it one of the largest apparel manufacturing and distribution companies in the world.
